| A. Benefits The VJAS, through its active state-wide programs, serves as an effective stimulus for scientific research by sponsoring programs for the advancement of science in grades 7 through 12 and by encouraging students to enter scientific research investigations in competition for awards at the annual VJAS meeting. All members are eligible to participate in research competitions, attend and participate in the annual meeting, and compete for numerous honors and awards. The VJAS provides a means for students to meet others of similar ages, intents, and ambitions from the Commonwealth. The annual meeting of VJAS provides an opportunity for students to attend lectures by professional scientists, scientific paper sessions of the VAS, and research presentations of their peers. B. Types of Membership and How to Join Two types of affiliations with the VJAS are available: Membership Application Forms must be copied from the current handbook ( Forms ). The current annual affiliation fee is on the form in the handbook.(after December 31 student membership is $15.00 for each student). Individual affiliations ($15.00 each) will be accepted ONLY from students in schools NOT affiliated with VJAS. Fees are subject to change by the VJAS Committee on an annual basis. Upon payment of the appropriate fees, certification of membership will be issued from the Director's office in the form of certificates for schools. If your school is not affiliated with the VJAS, write the Director for information on how to become affiliated. If your school is not involved, you should interest other students in becoming affiliated, develop a research project to submit for the annual meeting competition, and become an individual member of the VJAS until your school is affiliated. If your school is already affiliated, you are encouraged to participate, become active, and derive full benefit from it. Through classroom activities you can develop a research project for submission to the annual meeting competition. You will gain valuable experience from working on your own project, presenting it to others, and learning what other young scientists throughout the Commonwealth have accomplished. |
