Dr. Covington has also served on the Indiana State Board of Education, the Faulkner University Board of Trustees, and as Chairman of the Steering Committee on Historically Black Colleges and Universities for the U.S. Department of the Interior. Nine presidents/chancellors of public and private institutions or higher education comprised the membership of the Committee, which served the Department in an advisory capacity. In addition, he has served as a consultant to the Kellogg Foundation, the National Council for Higher Education Management Systems, and the U. S. Agency for International Development.

Dr. Covington's professional leadership activities have allowed him to travel extensively throughout the United States and abroad. He represented professional organizations and governmental agencies through visits to Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, England, France, Switzerland, and Israel, as well as the African republics of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Senegal.

Botanizing with Darwin
Dr. Duncan M. Porter
Professor of Botany
Department of Biology
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
Dr. Porter is an internationally recognized botanist who is the current Director for the Darwin Correspondence Project, which is based at the Cambridge University Library. He is a motivated teacher who stimulates student curiosity as they explore the remarkable diversity of plants. He is also Curator of the Massey Herbarium at Virginia Tech. Prior to initiating his career in Virginia in 1972, he was on the faculty of the University of San Francisco and served as Curator of the Flora of Panama at the Missouri Botanical Garden. He was Editor in Chief for the Flora North America Program of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., Associate Program Director for Systematic Biology at the National Science Foundation, and moved to Virginia Tech in 1975. Dr. Porter's most recent work at the Charles Darwin Research Station, Galapagos Islands affirms his role as a world class botanist and expert on Darwin's discoveries of plant adaptations to different ecosystems. In 1998,the Phi Beta Kappa Mu Chapter of Virginia awarded Dr. Porter the Albert Lee Sturm Award for Excellence in Faculty Research.

Planetarium Show

The Explorers
Dr. Rhett B Herman
Department of Chemistry and Physics
Radford University
http://www.runet.edu/~rherman

Dr. Herman received his PhD in Physics from Montana State University in 1996 and then joined the physics faculty at Radford University. Dr. Herman's research include relativistic quantum field theory in curved spacetime, semi-classical quantum gravity, and geophysics. He teaches a wide variety of physics courses at Radford University and is involved in curriculum development. Dr. Herman is the director of the Radford University Planetarium, which is used both for teaching in astronomy and related courses, as well as for public planetarium shows.

About the planetarium:

The Radford University Planetarium was constructed in 1971 and is located on the ground floor of Curie Hall in room 43. The planetarium projector is a Spitz/Goto Planetarium SG-8 Projector. There are 32 reclined planetarium seats within the 24-foot diameter dome; additional seats in the planetarium can accommodate larger groups. Additional multimedia capabilities include an Eikonal computer-driven projector, various slide projectors, and a sound system.

About the present show:

"The Explorers" was produced by the Bishop Museum and Planetarium in Hawaii in conjunction with NASA and celebrates human exploration in a full multimedia format. The program begins with the ancient Polynesian explorers who sailed the vast Pacific Ocean with only the stars to guide them. It then moves to the present and beyond, with our current explorations of space using the space shuttle and the International Space Station. The program culminates with NASA's planned mission to Mars in the year 2020.

Show for the VJAS and the VAS meetings:

The Radford University Planetarium can accommodate up to 45 people per show. Individual and group reservations for a particular show may be made directly through Dr. Herman: rherman@runet.edu or (540)831-6443. Tickets for any seats not reserved prior to meeting registration will be available at check-in.
