The Virginia Journal of Science (ISSN:0042-658X) is published four times a year (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) by the Virginia Academy of Science, 2500 W. Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia 23220-2054.  The pages are electronically mastered in the Parham Road Campus Biology Department of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.  The Virginia Academy of Science and the Editors of the Virginia Journal of Science assume no responsibility for statements or opinions advanced by contributors.

Subscription rates for the Journal: $35.00 per year, U.S.A.; $35.00 per year, other countries,also.  All foreign remittances must be made in U.S. dollars.  Most back issues are available.  Prices vary from $5.00 to $25.00 per issue postpaid.  Contact the Business Manager for the price of a specific issue.

The Virginia Journal of Science welcomes for consideration original articles and short notes in the various disciplines of engineering, science and science education. Cross-disciplinary papers dealing with advancements in science and technology and the impact of these on man and society are particularly welcome. Submission of an article implies that the article has not been published elsewhere while under consideration by the Journal.

Instructions to Authors

STYLE MANUAL

Three complete copies of each manuscript and figures are required. It is also requested that authors include a disk in PC compatible format containing an acceptable word processing file (Word or WordPerfect) or text file (ASCII) of the manuscript. Original figures need not be sent at this time. Authors should submit names of three potential reviewers. All manuscripts must be double-spaced. Do not use special effects such as bold or large print.
The title, author's name, affiliation, and address should be placed on a cover page. An abstract (not to exceed 200 words) summarizing the text, particularly the results and conclusions, is required. The text should follow the general format used by professional journals in the author's discipline. This usually means that the text will have sections consisting of Introduction, Materials & Methods, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgments and Literature Cited.   Literature cited in the text should follow the name-year format: (McCaffrey and Dueser, 1990) or (Williams et al., 1990). In the Literature Cited section at the end of the article, each reference should include the full name of the author(s), year, title of article, title of journal (using standard abbreviations), volume number and first and last page of the article. For a book, include author(s), year, title, pages or number of pages, publisher and city of publication.

Each figure and table should be mentioned specifically and in order in the text. All tables, figures and figure legends should be on a separate pages at the end of the text.  All digital images must be 300 dpi or better.
Multiple author papers are required to have a statement in the Acknowledgments indicating the participation and contribution of each author.
After revision and final acceptance of an article, the author will be required to furnish two error-free copies of the manuscript: 1) printed copy, single spaced, with tables and figure captions at the end of the document, and one set of original figures, each identified on the back by figure number and author's name; 2) a digital file (disk) containing the text file, tables and figure legends. Tables should be constructed by setting tabs. Do not combine tabs and spaces to align data--set tabs.
Authors in general will be allowed 15 printed pages (including figures) free, but payment of $50 per page may be charged for the 16th and subsequent pages, or $100 per page for color.
