VAS FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR 2009-2010

A message from the Chair, VAS Research Committee

About the Funding Program. As you are aware the VAS has a program of Grants and Awards for both junior and senior scientists. The program also encourages graduate students, Research Associates, and post-doctoral fellows to apply for these grants.

Please read carefully the RFP and follow the instructions as clearly outlined. The funds are limited and the academy is looking to fund as many quality proposals as possible. Therefore, it is important to adhere to the dollar amount stated in the RFP.

Who is Eligible? Post-doctoral, research associate and graduate students should include their advisors or mentors as Co-PI. This will enhance their chance for funding if they submit a quality proposal. The academy would like to insure the availability ofresearch facilities for this group of applicants through association with well established research facilities should the proposal be successful?

What are the Requirements? By policy, the academy requires the applicants be members. Membership for at least 6 months is required. Also, the academy encourages all members who successfully received grants, to present their findings at the annual meeting of the academy. In addition, new findings and interesting research should be publicized as a mean to strengthen our academy. If the applicant had previous funding from VAS, a brief report on the accomplishments or activities should be submitted by the PI to the Chair of the Research Committee. The authorized institutional representative must sign off on the proposal and indicate how funds are to be transmitted, when the proposalis funded.

Who to Contact? Please feel free to contact Chair of the research committee or Dr. R.G. Bass, the Executive Officer of the academy for further information if needed.
