SCIENCE PROGRAM
J. SARGEANT REYNOLDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE

PURPOSE

The employment opportunities for graduates in all fields of science are increasing rapidly. The Associate in Science Degree at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College is designed to transfer to a four-year college or university where the AS graduate then would complete a baccalaureate degree in the natural or physical sciences or mathematics. The AS Degree also prepares the graduate for continued training in the medical professions (nursing, pharmacy, medicine, and veterinary medicine).

Students should obtain information from the four-year, transfer institution or professional school concerning the specific requirements for transfer admission and baccalaureate degrees.

Students need to be aware of the changing employment market in central Virginia for graduates with the AS Degree in Science. For example, a semiconductor manufacturer has located a major plant in central Virginia and has indicated that it needs AS degree graduates for operators and technicians. The required academic background for such positions includes rigorous courses in chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, and communication skills. Students can obtain this background with the AS Degree in Science at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students who wish to enter the Science Program must satisfy the curricular admission requirements of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

The following high school units are strongly recommended: four units of English; three units of college preparatory mathematics; one unit of laboratory science; and two units of foreign language.

NOTE TO PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS

Students who wish to teach in the Commonwealth of Virginia must choose a major in content area; their undergraduate major cannot be Education (special professional courses in Education are offered at the four-year transfer institutions). The Science Program Curriculum is appropriate for those students who wish to teach in an elementary school or in the science or mathematics departments of a secondary school.

LENGTH OF PROGRAM

The AS degree in Science requires successful completion of a minimum of 63 credit hours of course work. Full-lime students complete this program in four semesters. Generally, science majors earn more than the 63 credit minimum.

TUITION

Tuition and fees are payable during registration at the beginning of each semester. Always check with the College to determine current tuition and fees. They are subject to change without notice.
