Invitation to Judge The Virginia Junior Academy of Science will hold its 2007 Annual Meeting in conjunction with the Virginia Academy of Science at James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA. in May. The purpose of this meeting is to give approximately 750 students in grades 7 through 12 from throughout the commonwealth the opportunity to present papers, which will report original research they have conducted. On Thursday, May 24, twenty-two papers will be presented every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. How can we accomplish this goal? In order to achieve this monumental task many volunteers are needed. Each of the sections requires three judges and a chair. Judges are needed in all fields: agriculture and animal science, animal behavior, botany, chemistry, computer science, consumer science, earth and space science, engineering, environmental science, genetics and cellular biology, math and statistics, medicine and health, microbiology, physical science (pilot), physics, psychology (general, learning and perception, and social), and zoology. Judging requires one to read and evaluate no more than twenty-two papers, which will be received approximately three weeks prior to the date of the meeting. The judges are required to be present, with those papers, at a briefing at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday in Ballroom A of the College Center. Breakfast will be served and volunteers will be given their duties for the day. Judges and chairs also will receive lunch and a picnic dinner. At the picnic you can meet and talk with the students who will be presenting. The Dinner with A Scientist event will be held Thursday evening. If you accept our invitation to be a judge at this year's annual meeting of the VJAS, complimentary parking on campus will be provided.
