The Fellows Fund of the Virginia Academy of Science

Establishment.
The Fellows Fund has been established, and may be increased, by donations from the Fellows of the Virginia Academy of Science. The Fund is therefore a gift to the Academy from a group of loyal supporters who wish to further the activities of the organization.
Purpose.
The Fund will be used to support activities of the Virginia Academy not normally provided for in the annual budget, thereby reflecting a more gracious impression of the Academy. Activities to be supported may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Support of special research publications.
  • Support for meetings of the Fellows.
  • Special projects of Academy Sections.
  • Honoraria for special guest speakers at meetings of the Senior Academy.
Management.
The Fund will be managed as follows:
  1. The Fund will be included with other Academy trust funds under the management of the Trust Committee.
  2. Disbursements from the interest generated by the Fund will be the responsibility of a committee of three Fellows, one of whom will be elected by the Fellows each year at the Fellows Breakfast during the Annual Meeting of the Academy. The member of the committee with the longest service will serve as the chairman.
  3. At the winter meeting of Council, the Trust Committee will inform the chairman of the Fellows Fund Committee of the amount of interest available for distribution.
  4. A proportion of the interest will be returned each year to the principal. The Trust Committee will determine what that proportion should be in order to protect the Fund from the effects of inflation.
  5. Proposals for the expenditure of funds should be sent in the form of a letter with supporting materials to the Executive Secretary of the Academy. He will be responsible for forwarding proposals to the chairman of Fellows Fund Committee.
  6. The Fellows Fund Committee will review the proposals and make recommendations to the Fellows who will decide which proposals are to be funded.
  7. Awards from the Fund will be announced at the Annual Meeting and in the Virginia Journal of Science.
Approved by Council - 8 November, 1987
